IMHO there really isn't a "better" dual use cartridge for the lower 48. That being said my .338WM has killed every animal I have ever hit with it.

First off, maybe go to Savages web page and look at their models.....I like the accu-stock and accu-trigger, and would get a weather warrior with both.  For a new to you dual purpose gun, maybe look at the short action .300 WSM.    :twocents:

Use your 30-06 and take the money you would have used on a new rifle and maybe upgrade the optics or buy a handgun or some new binoculars.  Just my opinion

Agreed.  If you have money to burn and just want something different, go for it.  Hard to beat an '06 or a .270 though.

These posts have gotta stop!!! There's a new one every week!

I'll throw out 338 mag, find a version you like ie win mag, rum, edge.

Then you have a more versatile gun collection.

If you have a 30-06 use that for your deer and elk gun. You may want to think about a smal caliber rifle for varmints or a larger caliber like a 375  for africa. :twocents:
Nothing like a Remington model 700xcr.

After my 30-06, my second choice would be a .308.

I'll kill them both with a 60gr Nosler Partition but I would have a much larger smile on my face, if I were doing it with some disgustingly large, inefficient, barrel burning, recoil producing super magnum with a sexy obnoxiously loud muzzle brake screwed on the end.

You have a fine dual purpose cartridge in the 30-06.  If you want something new and more interresting don't get yourself confused by thinking too broad for a combination gun.  Pick the best caliber you can think of for elk 7mm, .30 or .338 that you are sure you can shoot well.  When you find that gun you'll have one heck of a deer killer too.
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."
