Rotton Bull? whats the story behind the dead bull?

I saw this photo come into the random photos? Where was this, nice rack, I don't think I could have just left it in the ditch...

I beleive that's a bull Opportunist may have harvested.  Not sure thought.   Looks like the arrow in the creek as well.

It was found . Someone had lost it. I asked this same question not to long ago.

That's a picture my hunting partner took last year in the Starkey experimental forest in Oregon when he had the tag. That bull is laying in Meadow creek right next to the road.

My hunting partner Rod was driving back to camp and this other hunter flagged him down. The other hunter was driving by meadow creek and saw the bull laying in the creek. When he approached the live bull it couldn't get up. When it did get up it half charged him then fell back in the creek. The guy shot him and finished off the bull. Thats the arrow floating behind the bull. This was about the third week of the hunt and the bull had been wounded by another hunter in the neck sometime earlier in the hunt. You can see the arrow stuck in the neck in this photo.



 The bulls hair/hide was rotting off while he was alive and had maggots all over his neck and shoulder. The hunter who finished off the bull contacted the Starkey Experimental authorities. He could have tagged it and taken the horns but the meat was completely gone. The hunter did not want the bull and continued to hunt. The Starkey Experimental Forest personnel cut off the horns and left the carcass. I uploaded these photos and sent them in a pm I think it was to M-ray after I had posted about my hunting partners cougar he had killed on the same hunt.

It was a complete shame and a waste of beautiful bull.

Man that sucks! That is my worst nightmare to hit a bull and not being able to find it.

Sad thing is... It happens each and every year!!!      Not to offend anyone or any archers on here but having worked in and archery shop for 3 years I heard all sorts of stories with people loosing their animals and they'd try and blame it on us that the equipment failed or the arrow didn't fly right... Well the truth is they just NEVER practiced and/or knew where there *censored* was shooting, simple as that!  That is why I shoot year round and not just 2 or 3 times before season starts... Once again not trying to offend anyone, just stating the facts.

Thats why I pack during bow season. Folks drop tons of money int a setup  and barely shoot it, or they only shoot at known ranges. I guided archery hunters for one season, after that, I said to hell with that. People would rather have speed and not a good balanced set up.

There probably is some truth to that. Not sure how relative it is to dead bulls in the creek though. I have seen a fair amount of folks who were more interested in how fast their arrow flies than how well they can shoot their bow. Me not being a great shot I don't want to preach anything to those sort of folks.

I love the guys that admitt to taking neck shots with bows. LUNGS, its all about the LUNGS! Take the lungs out and the elk isnt going far.  The biggest bulls I have had chances at killing were passed up for moderate ar bad shot angles. One was a 370 bull. Could have taken a neck shot on him.

*censored* happens to everone at some point but there is no excuse for being lazy about your equipment and not shooting it until the week before the season starts.  Go out to any public range right before the season and you will see stuff that makes you cringe.

Last year I saw a guy that was going on a guided hunt in Idaho and showed up to the range with his brand new compound bow still in the box, no rest no sight no nock, and prceeded to fling arrows down range.  His arrows were hitting the ground after about ten feet and could not figure out what the problem was.  I left. I have no time for people like that.
