Bethel Ridge elk: 1961
« on: April 29, 2012, 10:23:54 PM »
I found some old slides that my dad took in 1961. He killed a 5 point bull on Bethel Ridge. I was too young to hunt with him at the time, but I still remember hearing about it.  I could hardly wait until I was 12 and could go with him.  I have many fond memories of hunting in that part of the country for many years with my father growing up.

I wish I were around back in the days you could put a elk head on the front of your rig and didn't have to worry about hurting someones feelings. whats wrong with being proud of your accomplishment?

Outstanding.  Your pic brings me back to the day of my youth hunting that same hill.  We all wore those mackinaw plaid wool coats, german army surplus wool pants (itched like a thoiusand fleas on your azz...LOL !  ~The good ole days before choose your weapon, spike only, branched antler permits, parking passes and the crowded fun of 9 day season in October.

I wish for the life of me that I had a GPS when I used to hunt with my dad.  For the most part all I remember about those hunting trips is riding in the back of a camper, arriving late at night in the dark, and getting up the next morning in the dark to hunt. I know we often went in from the Oak Creek side and hunted in several areas on top of Bethel Ridge but I couldn't be more specific.

Almost positive that clearing behind him in the 2nd pictures is up onto not far from the radio tower.

Great photos! What rifle did your Dad hunt with back then?
He hunted with a Springfield 03A3 in 30-06 that he customized.  He shot handloaded ammunition with 180 grain Sierra 180 Pro Hunter bullets.  (A few years ago I chronographed the loads and found they were around 2550 ft/second  :chuckle: )

At that time, the gun had a 4x scope that I believe was made by Bausch & Lomb.

That's the only rifle he ever hunted big game with.  I never saw he shoot more than once at an animal.

When he died I inherited the rifle from him.

IT is definitely up top of the ridge somewhere on the south facing side.   Elk are still there....just not often during the season they give us these days.
