Decent Inexpensive West side Guide?
« on: May 14, 2012, 04:33:46 PM »
I haven't been deer hunting before, and want to get out on a guided hunt before I try it myself.  However, I dont have the money for a $1,000+ trip that a lot of the bigger name guides charge. Anybody know a inexpensive guide?

I bet you could find someone on here to partner up with, just for the cost of half the gas.   :twocents:

If you read through old threads and ask the right questions. You won't need a guide. Try and hook up with someone on here and just go for a drive. Bet you learn a ton.

If you really want a guided hunt save some cash and do it right.  Or you could contact a c-post pro staff member and get some good hunt BS.

I decided that a guide probably isn't the best idea for me (mostly because of cost).  I guess I just need to figure it out by getting out in the forest to look for deer, then spend some time hunting em when the season comes around.  I figure I can look in the Snoqualmie-baker nf, up north by Monroe, and even down by greenwater.  If you know any other legal places to hunt nearby (I'm in the Kent/renton area), please let me know.  Don't worry, I'm not trying to steal your spots, I just want to know where I can legally hunt.  I can do all the scouting and work myself.

Seminars have always been a great place to meet people like yourself eager to learn and prospect.  Not sure if there is going to be another H-W BBQ this year.  That type of gathering is a great way for others to get to know you.  Face to face meetings with some fun and games allow people to find out more about person's character and disposition.  That's when you open doors and make lasting hunting partners.

Guides are a nice way to learn, but the good ones are not cheap.  A poor cheap guide probably is not going to teach you anything more than not to throw your money away on cheap guides.

Beware of gun and archery ranges.  The loudest guys there are usually full of the most crap.  They'll make friends with you in a heart beat and pull you in.  Usually because all their hunting partners told them to get lost.  A few of the loud mouths around here might really help you get your deer.  However, it might be wise to learn how to hunt during legal shooting hours and while sobber.
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

I would suggest not hunting alone. It's not a good idea for anyone even with a lot of experience. I know a lot of us do and probably get some of our best hunting in but there's so many things to learn and so many things can go south in a heartbeat! Buy yourself a survival book and read it cover to cover and also a good book on hunting. Scott Haugen and Boyd Iverson both have some good books out that will point you in the right direction as far as methods of hunting go for blacktails. Always be prepared; it can be a lifesaver.

I learned the most about blacktailed deer as I hunted alone, by myself, nobody else along. I would rather advise the newb to camp with a couple of guys, but get out on foot by himself. This way he has someone nearby who can sound the alarm if he becomes lost etc....

Mr user, go scouting for areas this spring and summer, pick a couple of these areas and make these your focus. Map the crap out of them, go there often but tread light, do not push the game out... Learn the lay of the land well. Black tail hunting IMHO is done best as slowly as you can possibly stand it. Good binoculars, few steps at a time, looking ahead, to the side and even behind yourself. Stalk, stalk, stalk, stalk, stalk. Go as slow as you can. You will stand deer up out of beds you did not see for the last 30minutes of your stalk. I have literally walked up and past a deer, it stood up 10 feet behind me. (shot at the blur of fuz in my scope and took home meat.... )
