Hunter memorials
« on: August 14, 2012, 09:59:12 PM »
Do any of you have family or friend memorials in the mountains?

This last weekend a group of us hiked a few miles up off of the roads and onto a high peak in the Cascades. We do this each year to visit a family member that passed a few years ago. It is this time of the year each time we go and it gets pretty darn hot and sweaty by the time we get to the top. The person that we visit is my cousin Mike. This is a hike that takes effort to get to, but is worth the work to get there.

Mike was a great hunter and a man's man. He was a very strong athletic person and someone that you really wanted at your side if there was trouble. He was a good man, but took crap from no one. Cancer took him down an awful road and eventually took his life.

When he passed, a group of us took his ashes very high into the mountains and scattered some of his ashes in one of his favorite hunting spots. We also took equipment with us and bored a hole into a rock that he used to hunt from for many years. In this hole we put a capsule with ashes from him in it. We also put his favorite hunting hat in there. We put some of his bullets in there and his favorite brand of beer in there, I do believe that we made sure it was empty first. We had a custom bronze plaque made to cover the hole up with and sealed it very well.

This memorial is in a place that I think maybe one person in a hundred years would stumble onto it. It is beautiful country there with a view for many miles overlooking a giant canyon where some beautiful animals live.

I have stumbled onto a couple of memorial spots over the years, but I am curious if many people do this.

I am including pictures of us working on the rock and what we put into it. Also a view from up there

That is really nice guys.

I've seen something like that before and never considered it was a memorial like what you tell. I was at first like............... whats that doing here. I could only reason out that some hunter died in that spot. Heart attack or something. Thanks.
times before with just leather, wool and cotton.

Back in '91 a cousin of mine took his own life while on a hunting trip near Tamarack Springs in the Manastash, his dad, brother and sister spread his ashes near the site where it happened. I've only been over there once since it happened, been meaning to get back again, just haven't.

That is awsome.  I would truely be honored if my family and or hunting buddies spread my ashes in what I call "Gods Country."  Looks like your cousin Mike has one of the most beautiful resting places a man could have.  Strong Work.

We would all be very lucky to have buddies (hunting or not) that would do something like that to forever honor our passion for the outdoors.

We made one in Montana for a friend of mines grandpa. Hiked a big pole and two bags of concrete up on the top of a ridge and made a flage pole put an american flag on it with a plaque at the base. Go back and change the flag every year.

We laid my father's ashes to rest on Bethel Ridge about a mile straight up from his favorite elk camp.

I covered it with his favorite hunting blanket and left the antlers of the first deer i ever shot on top of it.  This is located well off the beaten track in a place he can see the sunrise every day and not too far from where I killed my first buck.

We laid him to rest there in spring of 2002 and I try to make it back at least once a year.  The blanket is still there under the big sage.  I always takes me a few minutes to find the exact spot, but once i do it knocks me to my knees.

I would love to have something like this done.  I finally took a picture of one I had came across before to show my wife because she didn't believe me.  Devils Table, Bethel Unit.

There's 2 memorials side by side in the Umtanum overlooking a huge area of the Cascades.   Very nicely done posts/plaques to 2 old hunters.  I've always wanted to know the story.

My buddy and I spread the ashes of his old friend and hunting partner a few years back up on Clemens.  I had never done that before, very touching.

Good on you for honoring a long time friend and hunting partner.

the 1st time I came across it I was peering across the canyon and almost stepped on it.  I thought the same thing, if somebody knew the story or at least recognized the family?

I've found one in Winston Creek, one in Wynoochee, and a plaque in Satsop dedicated to a girl that was murdered there and also the detective who finally solved the case was added to the plaque post mortem.

There is one up near Buck Meadows in the campground.  I can't recall the guys name, but I like to see them as it shows respect and admiration for friends.

Is this the one up by riders camp? It's a little headstone on a concrete slab all fenced off from the rest of the area just off the side of the road looking out into the meadow?

Hey Mike, You are not forgotten!

Today we made our hike back up to a family member's memorial in the mountains. Pretty much the same description for the day  as I wrote on page one of this thread. Long hike, hot and sweaty, darn well worth the effort. We had others with us, but I wanted to keep this simple and consistant. Always rewarding at the top with the view. Feels good to spend time with family to remember ones that have past on.

We miss you Mike!
