Go-To Coho Lure
« on: September 13, 2012, 12:34:51 PM »
title says it all. What is yours?

Mine would probly be a #5 blue fox in chartruese, or all black.  Next would have to be a little cleo, firetiger or silver in color.

What about you guys?

Once they hit the river all I can catch them on is a big, weighted treble hook. Works every time! :yike:

A frog or 50/50 dick nite, and a firetiger or solid red, orange, or pink plug. Casting not trolling, hit the backsides of the rip water and close to structure. I had an old timer last year troll past me as i was casting plugs and say "you know those work better if you troll them". My response was, "How many fish do you have bled out today?" He said "One nice one". About that time my buddy and I pulled out 3 coho about 12-16lbs from the fish box. The old guy didnt have much to say about me casting plugs after that

Cleo or Bolo for me.  Depends on what water I am fishing as to which one I prefer more.  Probably landed more with the Bolo since it fits more of the water I fish.

Have had good luck in dark water steelhead fishing with it.  But have never used it for Coho.  Though we have had some success with Michael Jackson and cop car plugs in the past.

Eggs work! or The #4 or 5 Fox, whatever color I only have one left of...or the 1/3 oz. Little Cleo, or Dick Nite. I hear they are hitting shrimp in the Stilly, but I have been getting them in the Sound with herring or mini green squid.

Caught some in the 6-8 pound range around Hartstine/Squaxin islands this weekend on the good old #5 Blue Fox Vibrax in green.  The coho are stating to show in the South Sound pretty good right now.  On our way back in I watched a guy fight about an 8 pounder at Hunter Point.  He was doing like I did, fishing with a 6- 61/2 trout rod with light line.  Makes for a fun fight when you don't have a net and have to wear them out on light gear.

Eggs are about my least favorite coho offering.  They seem to hit hardware just as well, and fishing eggs is a lot more of a pain.

Shrimp in the Stilly?  isn't there a no bait rule on that river?

Including me.  The fish are sporadic biters this time of year with the low water.  It should be game on once it rains.  If you want to catch them consistently early you should head west and fish in tidewater.

Speaking of flossing.  I saw a guy on the Puyallup yesterday evening with 11 foot leader.  I think he went to the long leader as he did not know the tribe was netting the river.
