Yeah I'll add too I never heard a bugle during the middle of the day either but I think the 83 degree weather had more to do with it....

Sweet. Chances are we weren't in the same area or hunting the same day... Maybe I didn't hear them in the 25 mph wind though...

but I like the amusing tales of guys calling in a rutted up elk hunter :dunno:  :chuckle: :chuckle:

 :chuckle:

I did that one year down near Coos Bay on Weyerhauser land in the 80's during early archery.  I had been up since pre-dawn calling off landings and other high points.  I would usually give about ten minutes after stopping to start calling.  While waiting at one spot, I heard a bugle way down below me, so I called back.  "He" bugled again and I could tell right away it was another hunter as he repeated the exact same call.  I decided to have some fun, yeah maybe I was a bit of a jerk, but jeese, learn to call better....  I bugled and grunted each time they called.  After a while, I could see them (and hear them) "sneaking" up through the trees.  They could not see my truck when I stood up, waved, and drove away.

BTW, Karma rewarded me with a bear the next day and a nice fat cow a week after that.

To the OP, I agree, people do way too much calling and not enough listening, but I have had a fair amount of responses in the middle of the day as others have also stated.  It does suck them calling near your camp though.
Some of the worst bugles I’ve heard have come from elk. I hunted w/a guy and every time he heard a bad bugle he said it’s a hunter. I said let’s sit and see, I said we will look stubbed if it is a bull. Sure enough 2 5x5’s walked by. Most elk will chop a bugle off at the end and most hunters will peter them off at the end. I though a range cow mooed up in the wilderness after I called but it was a bull, he just mooed for a while then started to bugled. I’ve pulled over and called got an answer and worked that bull for 2 hrs. It got late so we moved out. Came in below him that afternoon and called him in 6x6 N.E. corner. While hunting in the N.E. corner again, I sat down for lunch about 11:30am, it was 80 degrees out. I sat and bugled, In about 30 min.s a nice 6x6 came in quite. No shot.

I agree, most bulls aren't perfect sounding, which was one reason I knew these were from a hunter, too perfect, and identical every time.  That is one problem I see with calls like the Hoochie Mama is that they are hard to do much variation with (sorry for the horrible sentence structure   ;)  ).

It took me 5 years to figure it out...i was told to get elk nuts cds...after listening to that pretty much everytime i was in my car from last dec till opening day this year...i went from not seeing an elk last year and was windering what i was doing.... to getting in elk everyday and calling 6 bulls this year....makes a HUGE difference to know what calls to make and when and how much...i would suggest any new elk hunter to pick up these cds if they plan on doing any calling

Thats what I did. I had the same results. I saw more elk this year thaen ever before. Still wasnt able to get a shot but I am getting better.

A great technique for locating elk is to call from the road at night and go into that place where they answer the next day. I know guys who drive around all night and sleep in the next day if they haven't located any. Maybe what you've previously perceived as educating elk is an effective tool you might start using. :dunno: As far as bugling from the middle of a field is concerned, who knows?

I know we all enjoy the many elk calls that are available,  but after recent observations in the field I think a few of us need to realize when and how to use them.  We observed three different hunters in our area this year that bugled while standing out in a wide open meadow during the day.  Or cow called and bugled after shooting light was long gone or from the road directly next to a hunting camp...  As a result the elk got a good education and we seldom if ever heard a bull bugle during the day.  Which was great for those of us that drew a bull tag this year.   Do us all a favor and get a little wiser this off season or leave the calls at home next year.

What a cry baby...give me a break.  Sounds like someone is trying to make lame excuses for why they didn't tag out.  If you and your buddies spent more time hunting instead of crying about other hunters calling techniques maybe you would get something.  I also think you need an education about elk calling; calling at night is a very effective technique and in very pressured areas may be one of the best or only ways to locate bulls.  I have had bulls respond and come in under a whole bunch of scenarios that don't fit in with what you and your crybaby friends watch on the Outdoor Channel.  Do us all a favor and stay home next time.

Maybe a little harsh, but some valid points are made.

I’m assuming, or hoping that he was referring to people calling elk to vehicles/camps/etc. therefore educating them as to who is saying what.

I agree that night time calling is a good tool.

Calling elk that you can’t hunt can really hurt the few tag holders in some areas… but it sure is fun!

I’ve been on both ends of this, this will be an argument as long as we have elk and elk hunters.

I call in more elk when goofing around with my calls then when trying to be serious....   :dunno:   But it's always fun to call in fellow hunters and keep them on edge while hiding behind a stump or tree.... Some guys I'm sure I've really pissed off... But at least I had fun doing it!!!!    :chuckle:   The scary part is when the cats sneek in on you.....

This was meant to be an educational thread to new archery hunters and to try and make the archery woods better for all of us.  If you think an elk that comes into a call and either sees/smells a hunter or gets a truck door slammed in their face doesn't learn something (educated) I think you're wrong.  The point I was trying make was to think about how you use your elk calls.  I agree that  using a bugle at night works to locate a bull for the next day, I've done it too.  But I also think calling too much can make animals leave an area or become call shy.  If you don't think so try hunting for elk in the Missouri Breaks of Montana sometime.  Or pick up a book on elk hunting or attend a seminar about elk hunting and calling.  If you think I'm being a crybaby then so be it, just don't be surprised when I approach you in the woods and have a little conversation.  That's what we did,  we talked to the hunters about the area and the other people hunting and came to a mutual agreement of what not to do.  They we're new to this area and appreciated the advice.  Funny, some people actually do appreciate advice and don't try and act like an _ss clown.
