Those Unit 11 Idaho bucks are more than impressive. I went to the Idaho Fish And Game site and took a look at the out of state stuff and found it a bit confusing, so I thought I would ask here. I haven't hunted Idaho in 15 or so years. Back then we could buy a over the counter Elk tag(Out Of State). Hunt Elk during the archery season and if we didn't close the deal we could come back for rifle. I know that has all changed.

I have several questions.

(1) Can I purchase a out of state license without applying?

(2) Does one just apply for Unit 11, is Unit 11 a general season or a permit only unit?

(3) When is the deadline for 2014 Unit 11 applications?

You can buy an OTC deer tag, good for areas that are not controlled hunts.

Unit 11 is all special permit.

I can't remember the deadline of the top of my head.  All the states kind of blur together over time.

There are no big bucks in Unit 11, the wolves ate them all.

1) yes, you have to purchase a hunting license in order to apply for a deer tag.

2) Unit 11 is a permit only hunt for mule deer.

3) Deadline is June 5th

To apply for the unit 11 deer hunt you only need a hunting license, their deadline is after ours.  You do not need to apply for a license, just buy one then apply for which hunt number you want when the time comes.  Unit 11 has a couple different hunts you can apply for. I don't believe there is a general OTC hunt there.  If you hunt archery or muzzy you have to prove you've been through a class or show a past tag has been bought in another state.

The hunting license allows you to bird hunt, and you can buy a wolf tag for a few bucks, and some units offer a very cheap bear tag as well.

I was just going through the info on the link Bobcat provided. I can purchase the out of state license, do I need to purchase the deer tag up front before applying or do I purchase it if I am drawn?

The way I read it, I purchase the license. Apply(No fee) and pay for the deer tag if drawn. I may be off here but it's all a little confusing.

I think you can buy a general deer tag now, and if drawn for the controlled hunt, you trade the general tag for the controlled tag. That way you know you can at least hunt deer in Idaho, even if you don't draw. But there is no requirement to pay for the deer tag before you draw. Unit 11 is a tough draw.

Your understanding is correct.

"Successful applicants for deer, elk, fall black bear or pronghorn controlled hunts must purchase their controlled hunt tag not later than August 1, at any license vendor, Fish and Game office, through the Internet, or by telephone at 800-554-8685. "

Unit 11 tags...its kinda like the guy who says "somebody has got to win" when talking about the latest Powerball jackpot. Sure you could draw the unit 11 rut tag but you'll probably go your whole life without ever drawing it.
That being said...somebody has got to draw it :chuckle: :chuckle:

You know it! My understanding is, that it's a straight draw and Idaho has no "Points system". Starting this late in the game, I like the odds of that over a points system.

You may also want to look into units 13 and 18. 13 has lots of private land but some good public and 18 is mostly public and a good portion is wilderness. Both are in hells canyon and have similar land types.

These guys are pulling your leg.  You have to fill out 3 forms, each 17 pages, submit a non-refundable $3000 application fee and then score a 95 or higher on the written exam before you can submit an application.  You should also know that there will be no deer tags offered in unit 11 for the next 5 years to offset the decrease in per capita income of rodeo clowns in Bangladesh. Oh, and even when they offer tags again you should know the bucks are really little crab claw fellas with hardly any mass.

Guess I'll just apply for Elk and deer watch during the slow parts of the day.
