Welcome elknfish. I don't hunt deer on this side but there are plenty of good guys on here that can point you in the right direction.

alot of the Buckley area is private property and alot of the green water area belongs to Hancock now so you have to buy a permit. I hunted a couple of spots just above Enumclaw last year and did not see a single deer. I talked to a Hancock security guy and said he hardly ever sees deer anymore. From what I hear you need to go beyond green water and then get up high. A few years ago we chased a few deer around in the Slippery Creek area. Take the first left hand turn when you cross the little bridge in Green Water and then go up the hill. Be careful though because it connects to the watershed. There use to be good hunting up off of the 7000 and 7200 line also. I am not sure if the area is still open for this year so check the regs. I use to hunt that area with my dad when I was a kid. He would tell me stories about the huge herds of elk and tons of deer. Not like that anymore. Now most of the area is a special draw for elk. We use to pull a deer out of the Hancock area almost every year but got tired of seeing less and less animals. We also started to see alot of dead animals with just a portion of the meat taken out. The common belief around here is that the indians are destroying the herds. Something to think about for next year is buying the Hancock permit, then you can go in behind the state school in Buckley. I always see deer running around in there and then there is a herd of Elk that run around in there too. Probably where I will go next year, hate paying to hunt but it saves on gas. Hope that helps a little

I would head up back behind the town of Wilkeson (watch out for the crack heads thou). I have hunted that a few times and seen deer and missed one th elast time iwas up there (mis judjed my distance). Or head up farther towards Mt Rainier, after you cross the one lane bridge stay on the lower road that takes you to Ipsut Creek. There are afew clearcuts on the lower end. if you get down to th ebottom where the brige crosses the carbon river, cross the bridge and hit the first road to the left. It has a gate on it but is some times open, if not walk back there, just stay low the deer like it around the river there (with in 1/4 mile).
Good Luck
Pete

The Hancock permit allows you to recreationaly use there property fpr a year. you can hunt, fish, Pick mushrooms and cut up to 10 cords of fire wood per year. $300 will cover you and your wife and 2 children under 18. NO ONE ELSE. If some one else wants to hunt with you or help to gether fire woo they must buy there own permit. I do believe you can get a permit fir a single person for less money but dont quote me on it. No camping is allowed on the property, you must enter and exit every day.
As for the total amount of permits, i do not know. I know they did not sell out this year. With money being tight this year fewer people have purchased them.
i have been considering buying a permit but have an issue with parting with that kind of money and bring limited on who i can bring.
When it was ran by Champion you could purchase daily pass, butthat was a long time ago.

My best friend lives in Bonny Lake, just off of the 410, he goes up to Greenwater almost every weekend and I think he told me that he has seen like three deer up there this year, not hunting season but this year. Elk are a different story. He has also mentioned the large number of Indians that he sees up there. He was up this last August and saw like ten of them all squeezed into a truck driving around looking for elk. I don't live on that side, but from what I've been told go south. If anything is open still down there go. My buddy usually gets his deer with me, a total meat hunter, this year he got a spike whitetail with me. But if he doesn't he goes down to the Toleto area. I don't know if that is open but I think the Battleground unit farther south is. You can look for public land of the fish and games web site. Go to the go-hunt link on the web site and put in the GMU you are interested in. It will give you all the state, federal and private land in that area. Good luck, happy holidays.
