Robo Deer Last Saturday
« on: October 20, 2016, 07:33:59 AM »
I don't want to say the location do to keeping the good work by the LEO's going, but it was fantastic to see a robo deer with LEO's working it.  It was set up well but the controllers were new at it.  We watched it for a little bit and moved on so they could catch the bad behavior of individuals.  We moved up the road a mile and we came across a roll over accident.  Maroon Toyota that rolled a few times and was sitting on it's side against a tree.   We looked in the truck and around for victims but thankfully could not see anyone.  We also stood still to listen for moans or noises and such but nothing.

So back down the road to mess with the LEO's party to inform them there was an accident and they might want to do a 50 foot grid search for a victims in case they were ejected from the truck.  They were very nice about abandoning their project for their public safety responsibility.  I kind of felt bad as there is a real need in this area to catch these poachers.  I have personally seen two deer with their heads taken off and the rest left to rot.

Ran into robot deer up Finney creek about 10 years ago. It was set up at night on a hill in the bend of a road. Looked good except the eyes were a dead giveaway. Huge amber green colored. I drove by it and could see it 10 yards out the window man it looked real, they even turned its head following my truck as I went by. Pretty cool set up and if there were poachers in the area I'm sure if they saw it they would shoot it.

Ran into robot deer

If you run into one with your truck can you now legally salvage it?   :chuckle:

I've always wanted to stop, get out and run up to the decoy screaming.......Tear the things head off and run back to the truck.

Then just sit back and see what happens.

Absolutely a trap. It was on private land and more then likely the person would be shooting from the road due to lack of shoulder space.  Wardens we're right around the corner!

I couldn't imagine they would set it on private land.  I would suspect it was shooting hours or maybe a mom with kittens?  Who knows though.
Glad they are out enforcing laws,  nonetheless.

I can't believe how real that cat looks, I am glad they don't set that up in Hancock cause there is no way I would try to get 40 ft off the road to shoot that kitty

Why would you have to get 40 feet off the road, a Hancock rule on their property?

No way you have to be 40 feet off a road, if that was the case there would be no road hunters, forgot the law but it doesn't state 40 feet.

private roads, FS roads are different than paved county roads and HWY's...  that is the difference.

The way I read it is.... You have to be off the maintained for public travel portion of any public highway... FS roads are not maintained for public travel!
Nor are the sides of such roads. Legal to shoot in my book. And always have. Saw a guy once on weyerhauser road once shoot a deer, while standing next to the warden. All he said was good shot.

I believe the key word in the law is "negligently".  It says something about how it is unlawful to negligently shoot from a road.  Of course my definition of negligence might be different than a warden's definition.  Could be a gray area.

This is correct.  You can now shoot from the road, across the road as long as you don't do it "negligently".  That is all open to the wardens interpretation.

Side note, it only applies to modern firearm, they left archery out of the new description so it is still illegal to shoot from the road, the maintained portion of the side of the road or across the road.
Pain is temporary, achieving the goal is worth it.

I didn't say it would be easy, I said it would be worth it.

I would imagine with a robo cougar they catch a lot of people. I would like to know what citations where issued. If it's for road hunting or just trespassing? :dunno:

It's illegal to shoot from roads on National Forest land, regardless of what the state law says. There is a federal law that applies to shooting from forest service roads.

I could be wrong; but I would bet if they put the cougar on public 75% of the rigs that came by would shoot. On a deer I think it would be lower depending on the size of horns. I read an article recently on the robo deer they put out in Oregon. The picture was of a tall 28" wide 4 point. I'm not sure many would drive by that either. :dunno:

2 of the last 3 times I have been hunting, motocyclists have been going around locked gates, clearly posted for walk in only, blowing by me. I am very happy to see and hear about wardens out and about. I filmed the last two bikers, but they didn't have plates. I was more than happy to toss several logs in there way on my way out.

Does that make them poachers for riding a bike in ..... not really ]
I think when he said "bikers" he meant motorcycle riders.  If they are breaking rules to get to game animals then yes they are poachers.  They are stealing opportunity from everyone that follows the rules.
Pain is temporary, achieving the goal is worth it.

I didn't say it would be easy, I said it would be worth it.

There were a pair of fake deer on the side of the road in my neck of the woods last weekend.  Both Saturday and Sunday mornings before daylight in the exact same spot.   It was Painfully obvious they were fakes.   It is Good to see fish and wildlife enforcing hunting laws.  I just wish they would target all poachers instead of only the blind, or drunk ones.   :chuckle:

I wonder how many guys they'd catch if they placed a robo-wolf out there?
 :o

Zero, there would be too many wildlife viewers from all over the country there oohing, aahing and spending $millions.

A few years back they were hitting the Upper Beaver Creek area out of Twisp hard... Opening weekend they had the deer set up on the gravel road under an old apple tree. They were getting mad cause people were stopping and taking selfies with it :chuckle: :chuckle: MONSTER buck just out of shooting hours. They also had a full mounted bear set up with his head in the bushes... We sat off out of the way and watched several people slam on the brakes and check it out. It was the middle of the day with a camp right by, never saw them bust anyone, but fun to watch. They had tons of Fish and Wildlife Officers from other areas helping. It was the strongest Wildlife Officer presence I've ever seen... I liked it. Really thins out the shady people.
THE WORLD NEEDS MORE PEOPLE HOLDING DEER IN PICTURES...
AND LESS PEOPLE HOLDING CAMERAS IN FRONT OF BATHROOM MIRRORS.
