Best out of state over the counter deer tag
« on: September 13, 2018, 04:47:10 PM »
I would like to start doing some research for an out of state over the counter tags. Not state draws. Ones that I can purchase and go hunt. State that I can see good bucks and have a quality hunt. Not road hunt. Maybe pack in. Just looking for a starting point so I can start my research. Utah, Nevada, Colorado, Wyoming.? And good price for the tag?

Thanks for any info

I dont believe any of those states have a true OTC.

I think Idaho is your huckleberry.

Idaho.

When you start looking farther east to the Rockies, the extra gas/lodging/etc. expenses and time off need to be factored in with the tag cost when you talk about "good price for the tag".

You didn't state weapon choice.  That also impacts availability of tags.   If you're an archer, Oregon can be good if you do your research.

UT has some general areas. NV is 100% draw, pretty sure CO is all draw ,but has some pretty easy to draw areas.  ID and MT are probably the best bets for just getting a tag even tho you have to apply in MT, but theres lots of tags.

For true OTC there’s really only one option. There are however a lot of states you can hunt every year without points but you have to do some planning ahead of time and not just show up and buy a tag.

Missouri, cheap over the counter tags and you can take multiple deer with all three weapons.  If you happen to be a disabled vet it's something like $45 for 6 deer tags.  Lots of public land.  Just giving you some options to consider.  :)

To my knowledge all of Montana is drawing only for non residents as far deer go. I’m sure there is exceptions. That being said the draw odds for non residents is better than most. Speedy but the price is well worth it. I prefer to hut less popular areas of western Montana as I’m a sucker for the high country muleys. That being said a lot of people are more apt to venture to eastern Montana where deer numbers are very good and a more open country better suited for glassing and spot and stock. Idaho also lands in some very similar turf at a much cheaper expense. I’ve hunted both with success.
