I'm not putting a pin in mine as I'm actually hunting the exact area this fall for the first time in a few decades.....   


Southern Oregon, Chetco unit.  1985.   The world's dumbest blacktail forked horn buck stood there while my dad and I had a conversation about whether I should shoot it or not.   32 yard shot with a 270 Win 130gr CoreLokt does serious damage to the chest of a little blacktail on a frontal shot at that range.

Oddly enough, my first buck was the biggest I've ever taken.  I was just a dumb kid who happened to be in the right place at the right time.

Still on the lookout for one.  Though it will be a decent one, I have let "meat" critters walk, though a pretty piebald doe almost won the ticket 2 years ago.

My first elk off of what was then Elmer Larson's Dary next to his bass pond.  He let me fish and hunt on it well before I had a driver's license.  All it cost me was a few days of putting up hay every year.  It only took me two and a half hours of walking through the woods from my house to get to his lower field that was bordered with timber lands.  Now I'd get a trespassing citation 15 minutes into my walk.  How's a kid supposed to hunt, fish, trap, and explore these days?!

First deer killed at 3 yards. Hasn't changed at all, the Y in that tree gets a little smaller every year though. 
I still love shooting whitetail on the ground with a shotgun.  Sometimes they catch you in a tree with the slightest movement but on the ground I have been able to get away with a lot more movement.  I have shot at least 5 deer sub 10 yards over the last 26 years.  Really wish an bull would make the same mistake for me.

First deer I killed was at Deer Lake here in Stevens county.
I drawed an any deer tag ,back when they gave you a green paper card,and permits was a random draw.
Location was private land that I had permission,but very close to the lake ,I would be surprised if anybody hunts it now days. I was young ,I'm not even sure if I was supposed to be hunting without an adult. But Anyway.
I will never forget this.

So I seen two deer ,the one kinda jumped off ,but the other just stood there.So I let the 30-30 rip probably shaken like a leaf in a wind storm. Found it expired ,it was a good shot.
I don't think I had a knife ,but can't really remember. So this was maybe 1000 yards from my house or 1/4 mile or something like ,and it was a small deer. I packed it on my back guts and all to the county road. Then dragged it in the ditch down this county road ,it was concrete so I was in the ditch. I can't imagine what people driving by thought,but I really didn't care. Had the 30-30 with a sling on my back and nobody really stoped or said anything.

So after the pure adrenaline pushed me home dragging this deer guts and all home. My dad worked graveyard and was sleeping. So I wake him, I shot a deer dad. He gets his knife and comes out and asked did you tag it. So he shows me how to tag it . Then tells me hay we leave these guts in the woods. So he starts to show me the gutting process. He is like hay ,you didn't shot a Doe ,I was pretty young,I'm like what are you talking about. He takes his knife at points at the pecker and says see this ,you shot a buck.
Yup a yearling button buck ,we look at the head just has little horns sticking above the hairline.
After that experience, I always had a knife even if it was just a small pocket knife,always tagged my animal,and always left the guts in the woods.

That 30-30 still sits at my father's house ,my brothers and I have killed many deer with it over the years. With that marlin hand me down rifle.

That first deer, I do remember I had just got done with 6th grade. Took my hunters ed in Spokane at the inland northwest wildlife counsel ,one of the instructor prompted me to put in for the permit ,and I got one.

My second deer was not far from the first.
A spike buck,I learned how to blood trail,tag,gut deer on my own after that. I do remember my first hunting knife was an old folder,just a peice of junk.But it was sharp from me sharpening it on a stone.

Some year later ,my parents gave me a model 700 in 270 that I have killed a few nice bucks in my 20's and 30's .
It just sits and waits for my kids to let it bark.
My wife still prompts me to use it at times.
It's been retired for quite a few years.
She knows if that rifle goes in the truck,and am opportunity shows it self. A dead deer will be coming home.
