Thought I'd try something here.  There's really not a forum that this exactly fits into so I thought I'd start it here and see if it takes off.
Since I've been around a while, this is easier for me than the younger among us.
Use Google Earth to find or post.

So, where were you when you got your first deer?
For me it was at: 46°56'37.83"N 122°24'19.19"W.

It's amazing to me how much the landscape has changed (developed) over the years.
A better example is where I shot my first pheasants.  It used to be just scotch broom and one gravel pit where folks target shot. Now take a look at it.

I don’t have gps coordinates but if I did all you would see is houses lol. The landscape has changed a ton. Nice close spots close to town back in the day. It’s sad to see things grow up and get developed.

About 400 yards from where I killed a buck last year........35 years later. I was devastated when this area was logged and even more so when it became thick, unhuntable ,dog hair reprod. Yet enough time has passed that once again it's a productive area. My Dad is 70 and hunted there before there were any roads. It's pretty strange to try and figure out where we are sometimes because of road changes etc over the years, but also pretty cool to be hunting our longtime family hunting area again

My first mallard ducks using dad's pump 16ga. I was in third grade and as far as I was concerned, that thing kicked like hell!  I was used to my single shot 28ga, which I still have.  Just about the time I got all shouldered up they flushed. My one "flock shot" resulted in two drakes.  I was beyond thrilled.  Our poor lab never had so many orders shouted out at her as that day.  Dad calmed me down and said, "she's been doing this longer than you, she'll find it" and well she did.  That valley used to be part of a very large farm where we hunted deer, elk, grouse and the occasional jump shooting ducks in that little pond, and the drainage ditch that ran down the middle of it.  The 60's were some of the very best times for me and daddy.  A few years down the road and nothing was more important to him than a full bottle of booze and a neighbor's wife.  Life sort of went south for this kid after that, but I still remember the good times before the booze took it all away from the family.

I don't know how to print out the picture, but for the coordinates, find your spot on Google Earth.  Go to place a pin on your spot, then copy and past the latitude and longitude in this thread. Don't forget to include the letter for North, West, South, or East too, or you'll end up somewhere else when the reader copies and tries to see where you're at.

Kind of my thoughts also. The landscape where I got my first (Methow, 1960,s) hasn't changed, went in there this past season with my granddaughter to show her because there will be a time I won't be able to get in there(4 1/2miles all up). I go in there every couple years, have never seen signs of another human, the area looks like it did over 50 years ago, the small jack pines are taller but the gully I dropped into and kicked up at least 6 bucks that were bedded (I honestly couldn't count them all) looks exactly the same. The big 5 point was the last buck out of the gully, stopped on top of the little hill and posed broadside for me at less than 50 yards, the buck fever was so intense I unloaded my 6mm on him and had to reload before finally hitting him on the second salvo , he just stood there, it was like I was supposed to get THIS buck, I will never forget it. The kids will still pull a buck out of there every once in awhile so I won't post GPS but its nothing like it was when you were able to hunt during migrations and predators were kept in check, I took 13 bucks in 13 years straight out of that exact spot, then started expanding my horizons.

My first deer was a whitey doe that dressed out at 135 lbs. I haven't been back to the road where I shot her since 1989 when I left. But as I look on Google maps, the area doesn't appear to have changed all that much.

First deer was when I was about 13 ? Don't remember exactly. Was with a bow and my dad right behind me. I'll never forget it.

Too bad it all went up in smoke shortly after and the road has been closed since.  Lots and lots of memories in these hills.

I'm not putting a pin in mine as I'm actually hunting the exact area this fall for the first time in a few decades.....   


Southern Oregon, Chetco unit.  1985.   The world's dumbest blacktail forked horn buck stood there while my dad and I had a conversation about whether I should shoot it or not.   32 yard shot with a 270 Win 130gr CoreLokt does serious damage to the chest of a little blacktail on a frontal shot at that range.

My first elk off of what was then Elmer Larson's Dary next to his bass pond.  He let me fish and hunt on it well before I had a driver's license.  All it cost me was a few days of putting up hay every year.  It only took me two and a half hours of walking through the woods from my house to get to his lower field that was bordered with timber lands.  Now I'd get a trespassing citation 15 minutes into my walk.  How's a kid supposed to hunt, fish, trap, and explore these days?!

First deer killed at 3 yards. Hasn't changed at all, the Y in that tree gets a little smaller every year though. 
I still love shooting whitetail on the ground with a shotgun.  Sometimes they catch you in a tree with the slightest movement but on the ground I have been able to get away with a lot more movement.  I have shot at least 5 deer sub 10 yards over the last 26 years.  Really wish an bull would make the same mistake for me.

First deer I killed was at Deer Lake here in Stevens county.
I drawed an any deer tag ,back when they gave you a green paper card,and permits was a random draw.
Location was private land that I had permission,but very close to the lake ,I would be surprised if anybody hunts it now days. I was young ,I'm not even sure if I was supposed to be hunting without an adult. But Anyway.
I will never forget this.

So I seen two deer ,the one kinda jumped off ,but the other just stood there.So I let the 30-30 rip probably shaken like a leaf in a wind storm. Found it expired ,it was a good shot.
I don't think I had a knife ,but can't really remember. So this was maybe 1000 yards from my house or 1/4 mile or something like ,and it was a small deer. I packed it on my back guts and all to the county road. Then dragged it in the ditch down this county road ,it was concrete so I was in the ditch. I can't imagine what people driving by thought,but I really didn't care. Had the 30-30 with a sling on my back and nobody really stoped or said anything.

So after the pure adrenaline pushed me home dragging this deer guts and all home. My dad worked graveyard and was sleeping. So I wake him, I shot a deer dad. He gets his knife and comes out and asked did you tag it. So he shows me how to tag it . Then tells me hay we leave these guts in the woods. So he starts to show me the gutting process. He is like hay ,you didn't shot a Doe ,I was pretty young,I'm like what are you talking about. He takes his knife at points at the pecker and says see this ,you shot a buck.
Yup a yearling button buck ,we look at the head just has little horns sticking above the hairline.
After that experience, I always had a knife even if it was just a small pocket knife,always tagged my animal,and always left the guts in the woods.

That 30-30 still sits at my father's house ,my brothers and I have killed many deer with it over the years. With that marlin hand me down rifle.

That first deer, I do remember I had just got done with 6th grade. Took my hunters ed in Spokane at the inland northwest wildlife counsel ,one of the instructor prompted me to put in for the permit ,and I got one.

My second deer was not far from the first.
A spike buck,I learned how to blood trail,tag,gut deer on my own after that. I do remember my first hunting knife was an old folder,just a peice of junk.But it was sharp from me sharpening it on a stone.

Some year later ,my parents gave me a model 700 in 270 that I have killed a few nice bucks in my 20's and 30's .
It just sits and waits for my kids to let it bark.
My wife still prompts me to use it at times.
It's been retired for quite a few years.
She knows if that rifle goes in the truck,and am opportunity shows it self. A dead deer will be coming home.
