My enthusiasm was so much higher decades ago.  Maybe I'm getting older, the draws are getting tougher, but my mindset has defiantly changed over the years,  I still hope this year I pull a great tag but with my much lowered expectations the disappointment will be minimal when I see a bunch of unselected.

 :yeah:
Just not feeling it this year...the last couple years actually I just don't get my hopes up...low tag numbers...great out of state success... IDK....my permit apps are half of what they used to be. I'm just burned out with getting all excited in Washington.... maybe I'm old and grouchy... maybe its because we got some cool life changing plans in the works....who knows...
If I draw i draw...if I don't meh...who cares .

I feel the exact same way.  I remember 25 to 30 years ago, grabbing a copy of the regs, breaking out all the Metzgers County maps and deciding where to go.  Have maps and an Atlas/Gazetteer spread out all over the dining room table as me and my buddies decided on special draw hunts. Fussing over the cards we had to mail in to the game department and all.  Making sure we had our choices correct and then dropping them in the mailbox with excitement.  Then checking the mail with the anticipation of seeing that postcard mailed back to you from the game department that you'd been drawn or not.  That was fun!

It's all kind of lost it's luster anymore.  We still apply, but really don't get our hopes up other than just getting out and hunting with our OTC tags.  If we're drawn, awesome.  If not, well that's awesome too I guess. LOL

One does not hunt in order to kill; on the contrary, one kills in order to have hunted. If one were to present the sportsman with the death of the animal as a gift he would refuse it. What he is after is having to win it, to conquer the surly brute through his own effort and skill with all the extras that this carries with it: the immersion in the countryside, the healthfulness of the exercise, the distraction from his job. ~ Jose Ortega y Gasset

I fully intend to draw the one tag that I put in for.

Confident I’m drawing Colorado but what the heck decided I’m fully in on Washington too just in case. Hate hitting that points only option. Would be pumped to draw something but I think I’m more hopeful my 13 year old cousin will draw a cow tag for a shot at his first elk this year.

Is this the thread we are going to use to hit the 100 page threshold to release the draw results?   :chuckle:
Introduce someone new to hunting this year.

No reason not to send it now that they let you turn your tags back in... worst case scenario you miss out on a point for WA

Do you even lose out on a point?  I thought WA added a point just prior to the draw...so if you return your permit, they restore your points, which includes the +1 used for the current years draw.

After a while I just can't get my hopes up much for the long odds as of late. I'm sure someone somewhere has the numbers, but the permits are down soooo far...

Maybe we need an official "2023 special draw results"  thread, that will draw more peeps in and get us to that 100 page quicker!!  Who knows, maybe results by next friday!!   :chuckle:

I think last year we got results June 14th. With the deadline being 5 days later this year, I'll guess we'll get results on Friday, June 16 this year.

They have slashed all of the decent special permit quotas so low that its just about not worth it.  its getting close to the mega-millions lottery draw odds. Still gets me wondering but nothing like the out of state draw suspense.

Been playing the game since 2001 when the Army moved me back here to WA.  No one (me or either of my boys) has ever drawn anything in the quality or OIL categories.  Not putting PathfinderJR in for anything this year, as he is Active Duty and with our luck he would finally draw and not be able to get home for it.  Little Pathfinder and I are all in; but obviously not expecting anything...

Hopeful the oldest daughter draws some youth tags this year.  She'll be to old next year to apply for any youth tags.
