Deschutes anterless help for elk!
« on: January 06, 2011, 02:33:13 PM »
My son has drawn GMU 666 Deschutes for an anterless tag starting Jan 10th...Does anyone have any information, spots, roads etc..that I could take him to? He has never killed an animal before,so if he could it would be awesome. I have heard that it is a tough place for elk unless you have private land.. Is that true?

Thanks for any help!!

Yup, its been a while since I've seen them too. I'm not even sure if they got one during the rifle season or not like they usually do. I did see them out spotlighting the night before the season, but the elk weren't in the field

Don't mean to be a bummer but don't you think it would have been a good idea to have scouted this area in advance if this was that important to your son?? It seems a bit late in the game to be asking for help a few days before the hunt and expect an outpouring of information. Good Luck.....hope you find one for him........Les

If you don't already have private land to hunt on that's got elk, I wouldn't even waste your gas. Sorry to say, but I can't think of a worse elk permit to have, unless you live here and have elk on your own land.   :twocents:

Ya, it is a bummer..my son had a buddy who was gonna give him a hook-up on private land but he was called to Boston on a new job. Just wanted to get out somewhere on public land with my son.

Yep, and they don't leave there very often. I keep telling my dad he needs to plant alfalfa  :chuckle:

Maybe try Ft Lewis of rainier road?  There are very few elk, but I hunted deer there this year and saw some sign in a couple spots.  It won't be a great hunt, but it sounds like you are looking for any public options.
