5 year old a new compound, release???
« on: March 17, 2011, 08:52:43 PM »
My dad spoils the crap out of his grand kids and just got my five year old a really nice little Diamond bow. chuckle: Like I said spoiled. But she is REALLY excited to start shooting with her dad. I'm thinking we will start with 10 yards.

The real question: does anyone know of a REALLY small youth release???

Bow details:

Brace Height: 6 1/8"
Axle to Axle: 22 1/2"
Draw Length: 14" - 24"
Draw Weights: 10 to 29 lbs
IBO Speed: 187 - 195 fps*
Let Off: 70%

Arctic Package includes:

•3-Pin Fiber Optic Sight
•Hostage Capture Arrow Rest
•2-Piece Quiver
•3 Carbon Arrows

If you shoot the first one you will never get that true trophy.

At five years old I think I'd be looking to start at 5 yards or less.  In the school program most 3rd graders can't hit a 36" target at 10 yards 4 out of 5 times.

That said, my girls both have a tru-ball junior release that would adjust down to almost baby size.  You can get a small wrist strap for about any release, so I'd look for an attachment point-to-trigger distance that is as short as possible and then see if the company offers a smaller strap.  The Carter Quickie is about as short as you can get since it's on a strap, and I'd be surprised if they don't have a velcro strap that adjusts to zero.
Bring a GPS!  It's awkward to have to eat your buddies!

I was thinking 10 because of the bows speed but 5 yards will be a good start, most likely in our garage. Thanks for the release ideas. It should be fun!  :chuckle:

Awhile back I purchased my son a Scott Little Bitty Goose with the youth velcro strap option.  Kinda spendy, but it's a great release and fits well around his very small wrist.

That's sweet. Do you use a peep at that age? My 5 yo. son really wants me to get him a bow. He's got a Bear youth bow, but it's still to big for him. How much did that one cost?

Might just start out with fingers, 3 fingers under.  My daughter has been flinging arrows since she was three now 7.  Have had a hard time getting her to shoot a release, but the one I have had success with is a hand held carter fits me or the  carter 2 special. I guess she likes it better because she is used to hanging on to her string but she wont give up on her fingers yet.
I did buy her a Scott that had a youth strap that fits her pretty good.
Yea I agree with Todd, no one likes to miss.  Comfort zone of 5 yards probably best to start with ....
Have fun that Nuclear Ice really spits out the arrows.
May I suggest getting some Easton Jazz arrows 1416 with 35 grain tips they fly and stick like darts and kids love to see the arrows stick ;) cheap to 35$ dz

Those are great little bows. My grandson is getting one on his 5th birthday this summer.

The owner of the local bow shop was talking with the reps for Diamond last fall and the said that a couple of guys were coing to crank these things down and add a long D loop to them and see if they  couldn'e kill a white tail. He didn't hear back on whether they were sucessful or not.

I got my boy the same bow at 2 ( a little premature). He turns 3 in may and is shooting it like a champ. I have him shooting fingers without a sight. I am doing this so all he has to worry about for now is techniqe and safty. If he keeps it up the way he is
I will be putting the sight on in about a year.

Another arrow to look at for the bow is the beman carbon flash arrows.  My grandma shoots them and my fiance used to shoot them and they shoot great out of lower poundage bows.

At our local shop, we usually set up the kids with the Truball Stinger Jr. Excellent release with lots of room to adjust.

I have the same bow for my 4 year old boy. He shoots it with fingers at 17 pounds and is getting pretty good. Can hit a 24" target at 10 yards most times noe. The bow is quite fast and I am really impressed with it.  If he were to use a release I would use The truball Jr. My girls use this one and it is quite smooth. Three of them in fact nice release. :twocents:
If we were supposed to be vegetarian God would have made broccoli more fun to shoot!
"HOYT" why would you even consider shooting something else?
