I have a few folks that I will never take fishing or hunting again due to their unreliability.  If you are going somewhere with me you had better be on time of the rig is leaving without you!  All it takes is a phone call ahead of time to smooth things out but it has to be a good excuse.  This crap of being too tired, hungover, overslept etc just doesn't cut it with me.  I had one "friend" drive 2 hours to meet with me to go hunting.  When he got to the meeting spot he reeked of beer and cigars.  I had told him to be a scent free as possible because we were going into a hotspot of mine and the bucks were pretty wary.  I was so pissed that I didn't even get out of my rig and drove off leaving him to drive back home alone.  It sucked because I shot a nice buck and had to pack it and my treestand out over 4 miles by myself in the pitch dark and in single digit weather.  I take my outdoor time too seriously to have it f-ed u by some half-assed, inconsiderate goofball.

I agree that unreliable people suck.  That said, we as hardcore outdoorsmen have a tough time when we bring people along who aren't as passionate about it as we are.  Be it an unsympathetic wife or an 'interested to learn about hunting' friend.  They just don't understand why you need to be in your spot before it gets light out.  They don't see how gas costs add up and wont offer to pitch in unless you stop at a gas station--even then sometimes they don't!

I don't think its as much about being a reliable person as taking the sport seriously/passionately.  That said an agreement is an agreement so if I got conned into going finger painting class at 7:00pm I know its inexcusable to roll in at 7:25...

That is why I always hunt or fish by myself, i will take my daughter out with me when she is off school or when I have free time but for the most part I am by myself. That way if something happens you can only blame yourself.

Yeah, but you might wind up blaming yourself for not having someone to help you when you're lost/injured/eaten by the bear.  Works well if you're road hunting deer and can check in on a nightly basis, but if you're backpacking on for several days going after an elk???

Mike, you should try driving all the way down there and find out nobody is going to make it, its happened before. I wasn't really worried this year when all the guys from the site came down, they paid for the trip so I was sure they would show but people that are just invited have called later saying sorry something came up. Fortunatly for me I generally take my daughter and plan on staying down there for 2 days anyway but I have guys no show at the Cowlitz before too :bash:

After living in Spokane and not being able to steelhead, sturgeon, or salmon fish without driving a long ways, I can't fathom why people won't roll their ass out of bed.  I took the fishing for granted a little bit while I lived in Longview, but I can't ever remember not getting up to go.  Especially the Cowlitz.  They can have some huge steelhead.  I remember reading where the hatchery had a 42 and 38 lb steelhead show up the same year.  They trucked them back downriver to give anglers another shot at them.  Nobody caught them, but the 42 had a broke off hook with a clown colored okie and yarn when they showed up the first time.

Since when is partying to late an excuse to "NOT" go fishing? These guys a seriously messed up. I can't remember how many times in my youth we partied to late....but we always made it out to fish. Sure I might have looked at food with a sideways glance until about noon and maybe even chummed a bit, that only makes the fishing better, lol.

Ever since I move to alaska I have had that same problem.  When I lived in Washington I never had the problem but now I do.  Now I have my 5 month old little girl to go.  She never complains and she is always ready.

I dont think I could do that Klick but its cool you are still getting out. I would be too afraid of falling in and not being able to get off my back in the current with the extra weight holding me down. Cool looking unit though.

Its works great plus I am usually doing some pretty easy wading.  Small creeks or just hiking on gravel bars.  She is definately a trooper thats for sure.

klickman, very cool. I remember walking the bank with my first born in a carrier. I would go a few steps, set him down watching me, and I would keep fishing. Mom was sleeping on the sand bar under a tarp, next to the hibachi. She was one tired but happy camper. She will always go if I am marinating something to cook on the river.

Klickman, I still got a couple very dependable and knowledgeable friends there if you need a contact for fishing or hunting................  Why does that look like a river I used to fish?  Keep that great kid away from the idiots snagging, seen more hooks in people heads that I care to remember.... And careful in the fast water, cringed when a guy with same set-up went down at the mouth of the Russian River with Jr. on the back (2 1/2 foot water), thank god he was able to pop right up with nothing but a wet kid...  Scared us half to death...

Cohoho
That is a picture at Ptarmigan creek.  I won't take her to the Russian.  What a zoo.  Actually I don't fish there at all.  More idiots there than ever before.  She has done more fishing in her first 5 months of life than a lot of people will do in a life time.  She went out king fishing on the kenai, out in front of the house.  We even had a really calm day on the inlet and got to take her halibut fishing.  It won't be long and I'll be taking her to catch her own fish.

I am envious this year for sure.....  Miss that place, especially now.  My favorite fishing was from now till it froze on the Russian, why- all the people have gone home and yea you had to sort through the nasty falling apart Reds to get to the Silvers and Jumbo HUGE Rainbows 26"-30"....  Man, have fun and enjoy and keep us posted on your catches throughout the rest of the season before freeze-up...  Another good place was, heck I can't remember the name of the creek, I got CRS (Can't Remember *censored*)... Anyhow the creek came out it to Kenai Lake just past the campground, excellent for Dolly's, especially the ones sitting under more smoked out Reds... Although, keep an eye open for Browines, lots of them though that section, and the best part NO PEOPLE, everyone else is trying to fill the Moose tag....  Did I tell you I miss that place this time of the year.... Man oh Man...
