270 and 30-06 cartridge
« on: June 14, 2016, 06:53:43 PM »
What would you guys suggest for a elk cartridge for both these calibers? I'm gonna have my boy shooting both guns to figure out which one he is more accurate with at longer ranges. He is 15 and can handle both guns with no problem. Both guns are Ruger Americans.

For the .270 I'd use a 150gr nosler partition

Is cost a factor? If so, I'd go with the 30/06 and 180 grain Winchester Power Points. They're only $18 at Walmart.

Otherwise, with a more "premium bullet" like the Nosler Partitions or Accubonds, I'd look at 165 grain bullets in the 30/06, and 150 grain in the 270.

I'm really really digging the 200 grain accubond in the 06.

Depends on what loads your rifle likes? The Nosler partition is an exceptional bullet, worked well for me from blacktail to moose. I like 180's and 200's in the 06. My .270 likes 130 and 140 grain, I have heard a lot of good things about the accubonds and I am looking forward to trying them myself.

I shot a big cow at 200 yards with 140 accubond from my 270. I hit her square in the shoulder twice. Massive exit wound and completely wrecked both shoulders. I think it's a fine elk combo

I never put much stock in the " shoot what your guns likes best" thing. I've never shot or reloaded a single bullet or cartridge that would be considered " not accurate enough for hunting".

My goal is to shoot killing shots. Not groups on animals.

Do you reload ?  I have always been a hornady fan. My dad hunted with a 270. Shooting 140 grn btsp loaded with imr 4831 for over 40 years. I watched him tip over many elk & deer with that load.
When I hunt modern I shoot a 30-06 loaded with hornady 165 grn sst with imr 4007sc & I can attest on how deadly that load is on elk.
Both are great elk loads. My old man would argue he could shoot farther and flatter than me. But I always enjoyed the extra knock down power from my -06. Depending on the brand of rifle the recoil is very similar.
I don't think you can wrong with either choice.

My dad's go to load was the 140 gr btsp with 58.5 grs 4831 in .270!  great combo!  these days he's dropped it to 58 grains  :chuckle:

I do not reload. I will have him target practicing with cheaper bullets and then try out some of the mentioned brands.
