Abandoned stand, hunting the area.
« on: September 07, 2019, 04:39:53 PM »
Not sure if I found a guys stand he just leaves up year round or if it was abandoned. I have no intent to take it or anything but the area is full of deer and even elk sign so I was hunting through when I found it. Looks like newer stuff but weathered and unmaintained. Seeing the other thread I don’t wanna set up near someone’s stuff but found a sweet spot for a stand just a few hundred yards before this guys stuff. You guys think I should leave him a note or just set up my area? Mostly setting it up for a buddy who’s only gonna be able to get out during late season.
May my presence go unnoticed, may my shot be true, may the blood trail be short.

Amen

It's public land. Don't set up right on it, but you can hunt the area.

Someone else has claimed this spot. You now need to hunt another mountain.

Easy. Use commom sense and if it looks abandoned it likely is. Hunt away.

Whatever happened to leave no trace? If I leave a junk tackle box on the river does that mean that I own that spot.Any stand without someone sitting in it on public land is abandoned.Too many guys think they own what belongs to all of us.

Well I’ll set up a camera tomorrow and get a stand rigged up! I hunted maybe 3 times from a tree stand in my life, a handful from a ground blind, mostly spot and stalk or still hunting. I’m new to treestand manners.
May my presence go unnoticed, may my shot be true, may the blood trail be short.

I deer hunt private property and my stand is usually up for weeks or months depending on who else is hunting. My stand looks pretty weathered and could easily look abandoned. Could be someone hunting it still but it's up to you if you want to hunt the area just don't use the stand  :twocents:

literally do whatever you want to do within the law, its public land. Follow your own ethics and the law and you're just fine.

What area is that stand in? My partner hurt his back last year and had to leave his in the woods over the winter. Just getting back into hunting shape and will be in it next week after he replaces the straps so it was kind of abandoned but not really..
