I'm a salmon newbie, are the pinks not worth keeping once they're in the rivers? I was going to hit the Snoho when they start coming in...my boat isn't sound worthy.

You will get about a 90 percent answer of "their not bad smoked." I can tell you they are not good either. We save pinks for crab bait. I would rather eat a stocker trout over a pink. I am a salmon snob though. But they are fun for the kids to catch.

Apparently you do not know how to cook or smoke salmon.   :chuckle:

I tend to agree that pinks are sub-par.  They are edible, but they certainly aren't anywhere close to as good as some other salmon.

 +1, they all get released.

We did a blind fold taste test one year. BBQ coho and pinks. Some of the participants were “humpies suck” crowd. There wasn’t one person whom could definitely tell a difference.

They ain't fresh springer or fat-dripping ocean king or prime fresh coho, but they are salmon and still really good when fresh and cared for properly.

And most importantly, when in Rome...

One does not hunt in order to kill; on the contrary, one kills in order to have hunted. If one were to present the sportsman with the death of the animal as a gift he would refuse it. What he is after is having to win it, to conquer the surly brute through his own effort and skill with all the extras that this carries with it: the immersion in the countryside, the healthfulness of the exercise, the distraction from his job. ~ Jose Ortega y Gasset

I like making fish cakes with most of my..."lesser quality" fish so sounds like they could be a good candidate for that. Still working my way through that 2019 thread. If anyone has any suggestions for a guy with a 14' boat and no downriggers ahead of the Snoho opening, my inbox is always open!  ;)

What's the best tide to fish off the shore? Or is first light good?

General rule I follow: minimum 6 feet of water moving, last two hours of flood, and a west to northwest wind. If it’s low pressure I won’t go.

I know nothing about pinks. Do they travel along shorelines, or are beach anglers just fishing at pinch points, or ??

They are very catchable casting from shore along many areas.

Best strategy is usually to fish something like 2 hours before high tide.

Bait gets pushed in shore and the pinks follow them in.

Every 3rd or 4th fish or so will actually strike within 3-8 feet of shore.   It will wake you up!

Down here in 11 there are loads of people catching them from shore in seemingly open shallow water.
